DANZAS DEL ECUADOR

Network returns to the Teatro Esperanza to present this electrifying program of music by Ecuadorian composer Jorge Oviedo. The program features the premiere of Jorge Oviedo’s Kawsay, commissioned in part by Network for New Music. Taking its title from the Kichwa word for “life” or “existence,” Kawsay is a five-movement suite drawing upon Ecuadorian and Andean musical traditions, including Caipishca from Saraguro, Yaraví, Pasillo, Amor Fino, and Raymi polyphonic music. The program also features Oviedo’s arrangements of Ecuadorian music from the 19th and 20th centuries, bringing genres including albazo and san juanito into a contemporary chamber-music setting.
