Now Again

The distinctive character and originality of Bernard Rands’ music have been variously described as “plangent lyricism with a dramatic intensity” and a “musicality and clarity of idea allied to a sophisticated and elegant technical mastery.” Through more than 100 published works and many recordings, Rands has been firmly established as a major figure in contemporary music.

Now Again: Music by Bernard Rands, Network for New Music’s newest CD, features previously unrecorded music by Rands, including the exquisite “now again”–fragments from Sappho, a Koussevitzky-commissioned work written for and premiered by the Network for New Music Ensemble with guest Janice Felty, mezzo.

Tracks:

Prelude/…sans voix parmi les voix…
two beautiful trios for flute, viola and harp
“wonderfully irresistible, obsessive in its way, yet sinuous and supple–rather like seeing a blue-ribbon tabby fascinated by the sight of a whirling mobile” (21st Century Music)

Scherzi
for clarinet, violin, cello and piano
“tight, witty, no-nonsense stuff that leaves the listener perfectly satisfied” (new music connoisseur)

Walcott Songs (Endings; Midsummer, Tobago; The Fist)
three deeply felt settings of poetry by
Derek Walcott, for mezzo and cello

“now again”–fragments from Sappho
Network for New Music Ensemble, Jan Krzywicki, conductor
“…Rands has triumphed in his major new work…["now again"] had a wonderful strangeness and mystery…As with all great pieces, so much was implied by so little.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

Performed by the Network for New Music Ensemble, Linda Reichert, Artistic Director, and Jan Krzywicki, conductor; with guest artist Janice Felty, mezzo.
