Contemporary classical music sometimes finds inspiration in remote places. Philadelphia composer Andrea Clearfield and ethnomusicologist Katey Blumenthal traveled to Lo Monthang in Nepal, where they made field recordings of Tibetan folk music and sacred songs. Network for New Music asked composers Clearfield, Eric Moe, Michael Djupstrom, and Tony Solitro to explore the recordings of these songs, almost never heard outside of this remote region, and with that inspiration, to create new music to be played by Western instruments. The pieces that they wrote expressed the spiritual, musical, and human connections between Eastern and Western cultures and philosophies; they were performed in Philadelphia by Network for New Music.
